Building Stata

Frank Gehry's Stata Center houses MIT's intelligence sciences departments, making it home to researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, linguistics, philosophy, and related pursuits. Vern Associates was given the challenge of preparing a general-audience book showcasing both the building's ingenious planning and design and the pioneering construction processes used to assemble it.

Concept

While the completed Stata Center is an astonishing accomplishment, it was clear from the start that the processes employed to complete the building were equally remarkable. Urban planning, massing, landscaping, exterior finishes, interior design as well as the often state-of-the-art construction processes used to achieve this miraculous architectural feat all make for a compelling story.

Design & Content

More than 300 pictures are included in a book that relies on graphic design to convey the breathtaking sweep of the building. Author Nancy Joyce, senior project manager for the Stata Center, writes with first-hand knowledge and comprehension. The book first addresses ideas and procedures that predate breaking ground, then segues into a photo essay about the innovative uses of construction processes, itself a tour de force of evocative imagery by photojournalist Richard Sobol.

Production

Vern Associates managed production, from typesetting and layout through color correction.

The Result

A look behind the construction fence at everything that goes into making a Frank Gehry building a reality. Long after MIT's students and faculty have come to call the Stata Center home, Building Stata will provide an approachable, clear look at what was involved in planning, designing, and building this masterpiece.
