Small-format picture books seem to be perennial favorites. Trouble is, those incorporating fine art often suffer from poor design and production. Vern Associates recognized the need for high-quality, reasonably priced, gift books to mark Christian holy days and other church-related occasions. Henry Holt, which was about to introduce illustrated books into its list, agreed with our estimation.

Concept

A contemporary "book of hours" comprising well-loved Bible verses illustrated with details from European and American paintings. Pretty straightforward. But we pushed the idea just a little farther by providing information about the works of art in the mini-gallery that concludes each volume.

Design & Content

Vern Associates painstakingly researched and selected all the art (more than 75 works overall) from numerous European and American museums and collections. Each detail was selected as a modern-day "illumination" for the Bible excerpts. A brief "biography" of the work accompanies its full-image reproduction. Special care was taken to select art that at once conveyed the text's message and revealed its continued relevance over time.

Production

Top-notch printing enhances a feeling of taking part in an intimate, potentially revelatory experience. Vern Associates handled all aspects of production, right through personal supervision of the printing in Singapore.
