Boston's MFA approached Vern Associates to edit, design, and produce the inaugural volume of a projected three-volume catalogue of the museum's justly famous French paintings collection.

In copy editing and styling the manuscript, we carefully accommodated all the special needs of a complex collection catalogue. Our editors worked with museum staff to resolve inconsistencies within the text and fine tuned the book's scholarly apparatus.

A principal challenge was one of design: with two volumes still in the future, we needed to devise consistent specifications that accommodate paintings in all three volumes. While the works in this volume are predominantly vertical in orientation, those in the next two tend toward the horizontal.

The luxe specifications, fastidious attention to detail, and exceptionally fine printing make this collection catalogue a delight to behold and a valuable addition to the scholarly literature on French painting.
