Visualizing Density

Density—a dirty word to many—is a crucial element in smart planning. This single-volume book examines the realities behind good and bad approaches to planning for density. Through majestic aerial photography, it demonstrates visually how the numbers tell only one side of the story. More than just a planner's tool, the book assists members of the general audience in visualizating various degrees of density, making them better-informed citizens when they enter into the debate.

This prize-winning volume really brings together two books. First the text explores extant approaches to density and gives examples of healthy ways that density can be employed to solve many of the thorniest contemporary planning issues. Next, nearly two-thirds of the book is dedicated to the catalog—the most comprehensive visual presentation of U.S. geographic density in print. Numerous architects and urban planners have hailed it as an extraordinarily innovative and important tool.
